Synopsis

The present volume intends to perform a comparative and contrastive reading of Possession (Antonia Susan Byatt), The Golden Notebook (Dora Lessing), and Wide Sargasso Sea (Jean Rhys), in order to extract the input of their authors to the contemporary debate on the canon. More often than not, these novelists seem to advocate the aesthetic superiority of the classic canonical works (unlike other postmodernist authors) and to promote the importance of opening the canon according to one’s subjective judgement. The three novels are set out to re-write previous texts snd to re-visit previous historical eras, raising questins regarding the contemporary author’s role in connection to their texts, other texts, other authors and their readership.
