Peculiarities of the Establishment of the „Soviet Power” in Ismail County (June- September 1940)

Abstract

This paper studies the initial stage in the establishment of “Soviet power” in Ismail County, which at the time when the Romanian administration and military withdrew from Bessarabia was part of the Lower Danube Region.
With the months of June and July 1940 as chronological landmarks and, based on lesser-known archival sources and testimonies of the direct participants in the events, I bring new light to the events that resulted in the initial phase of the establishment of the Soviet regime in Southern Bessarabia, especially in Ismail County.
The main method of data collection is the content analysis of documents produced by the Romanian administration and police authorities.
