Abstract

The present study aims to highlight the brilliant preaching quality of the word of our Saviour Jesus Christ of St Metropolitan Anthimos the Ivirite, as evidenced by his Homilies (Didahii - Collection of sermons), whose educational value is doubled by a literary form with great power of suggestion and of a great beauty of the language. The texts are analysed literally, linguistically or theologically, speaking of a feature found in some of the Holy Hierarchs' Didahii, which could be defined as moving visuals or cinematic expression! By way of example, fragments were chosen of two variants of the Didahii dedicated to the commemoration of the Great Martyr Demetrius – the Myrrhstreamer, namely those passages relating to the Holy Gospel on “The quenching of the storm (in the text: the earthquake) by sea...” by the Saviour Jesus Christ, in the ship with His disciples. The text of the sermon is, in fact, a small documentary film, whose creator – Saint Anthimos the Ivirite – is both scriptwriter, director, cameraman and, crowning all of them, a composer of a sublime homiletic commentary. To read this fragment, you need only a visual imagination exercise, following reading by hearing, closing your eyes and projecting the narrative on the screen of mind. It is noticed that the text, which is very well written, is performed as after an absolutely professional cinematic cut.
