Contemporary Challenges in Investigating Travel Document Forgery - Between Security Technologies and Organized Cross-Border Crime
Abstract
In the context of globalization and the heightened dynamics of migration, travel documents represent the central pillar for exercising the right to free movement, while simultaneously being the primary target for cross-border criminal groups. This article analyzes the evolution of passport and identity document forgery, moving from classical methods of material alteration to sophisticated techniques of biometric data manipulation and identity theft. The paper explores the challenges faced by criminal investigation authorities in detecting high-quality forgeries, highlighting the discrepancy between technological advancements in document security and the ingenuity of organized crime. Particular attention is given to the use of new technologies in the investigative process, as well as the importance of international police cooperation through shared databases. By corroborated analysis of national legislation on the regime of free movement and current European regulations, the study proposes solutions for streamlining border control processes and improving mechanisms for preventing travel document fraud. The research findings underscore the need for a constant adaptation of investigative methods to the new realities of the digital era, ensuring a balance between the facilitation of citizen movement and the imperative of national and international security.
