Abstract

The beginning of the XXth century is marked by the centering of teachers' interest on the child, more precisely by the effects of teaching on the main beneficiary of the educational act: the pupil. This is the result of numerous research studies which highlight the importance of education from the earliest stages of a child's life. The fundamental condition for conducting the educational act on a scientific basis was the knowledge of the laws of child’s development. During this period, a number of educationalists, starting with Jean Piaget, focused their attention on the age of childhood, trying to identify several stages of psychological development. Piaget’s theory becomes very important and a programme based on Piagetian theory emphasises a child-centred educational philosophy. In this context, the teacher's role becomes that of a facilitator of learning according to the students’ cognitive level, and their strengths or weaknesses.
