Abstract

In playwriting, the stage direction is often considered more of an accident: an indispensable but purely functional object. Yet, the stage direction has undergone many transformations over the centuries, gaining literary dignity and becoming a deputed place where playwrights can present proposals for scenic innovation and talk about what crisis of dialogue makes now impossible to "say" in theatres. The text is the introduction to an essay focused on the evolution of Luigi Pirandello's approach to captioning in relation to his experience as a metteur en scène.
