Abstract

Coming from the Jester in “Regele se amuză” by Victor Hugo, librettist
Francesco Maria Piave and composer Giuseppe Verdi have built a particular character of
lyric opera, in which the emotional charge, gracefully drawn with the hugolian
instruments of powerful romance, is redefining its coordinates based on musical-lyric
emotions, with the complex resources of libretto and music. Therefore, our approach is a
comparative analysis of the two characters from the source text and libretto, in order to
identify common elements and particular points of structural innovation, with a
relatively distinct purpose.
