Abstract

While approaching the most relevant identity coordinates of Istrati’s writing, we shall kick off with an X-ray of the identity-otherness report. Then, in order to illustrate the multiple facets of Istrate’s personality, we shall choose for the research corpus the following reference texts; the first and most famous success, his debut short novel “Chira Chiralina”, the volumes “Haiducii” (The Outlaws) and “Spovedanie pentru învinși” (Confession for the vanquished), a particularity of Istrati’s writings, a book with strong meditative-confessional streaks. By identifying the main discourse types, we shall investigate the fictional universe, with examples of heroes searching for oneself, noting the true marks of Istrate’s paratopia. In order to support the plurality and mixture of the identities Panait Istrati projects in his work, we shall present the autobiographic as identity interface, then we shall analyse the narrative identity and the projections of Istrati’s identity in characters, places and symbols. Thus, we shall notice the most important identity representations, both at the individual level, the narrator-man, and community level, Brăila and the Balkans. The narrator often carries us to surprising places and passionately recounts, either in the 1st person or the 3rd person, leaving everything to Adrian Zografi, the writer’s alter-ego, a typically fictional referent.
