Abstract

Titu Maiorescu's "journal" represents a unique, impressive appearance of Romanian literature, through the value of the notes, time span and the age of the author. Maiorescu set out to start a diary out of the desire to constantly reflect on reality, out of the need to confess and set landmarks for self-knowledge, aspects also encountered in the journal of the German writer, Goethe, about whom he speaks, mentioning that he identified common features between his inner feelings and those of the German writer. Maiorescu wrote daily, immersing in the labyrinth of his diary, notes on small aspects of life, acute emotional turmoil, various information, gestures, feelings, physiological incidents, along with cultural, social and historical events of great significance. The philosophical profile clearly results from his notes, as a result of studying the problems of philosophy, starting from the work of Herbart, in order to create an original conception of social relations in the Herbartian spirit. "The Diary", through its unique character, contributes to the good knowledge of Titu Maiorescu's personality, and from a historical-literary point of view it outlines the cultural, social and political aspect of the period of definitive crystallization of his philosophical and aesthetic formation.
