Abstract

In 2014, when Romanian society was celebrating a quarter of a century of social and cultural freedom, Gabriela Adameșteanu was publishing her “Romantic Years” novel. Operating not only as a viewer who ‘observes’, but as an actor who ‘participates’, the writer produces a substantial document about a historical period and the events that mark it, points out moments, facts, attitudes, as well as human relationships. Adameșteanu hesitates to classify her book as a memoir and this may be because she is aware that memory is itself subjective and it can thus betray. Memory is tender and selective, only a 'particle' represented from the past, not due to a volitional act, but to an affective stimulus. The book is, therefore, not only a narration of a life story, but a triumph of life against imagination, of reality against fiction, as the writer herself confesses.
