Abstract

In social and political contexts of acute menace or in difficult periods in the life of acertain individual, literature has an important role in preserving human balance because it addresses the soul and mind alike and leads to a process of inner transformation, of slow refinement that fundamentally changes us. At times confessional, descriptive, shocking, naturalistic, romantic, modern, exceptional through the charm of style, language, ideas, literature is undeniably a place of healing and refuge, but also of self-creation, of establishing one's own values. Literature stimulates strong emotions and has a cathartic function, and although it does not beautify or debase reality itself which preserves its own laws and rules, it nevertheless produces a change in vision of reality. I think that the act of culture is extremely important because a man who only inhabits concrete sphere is like the people in the cave that Plato talks about in the Republic, who cannot reach the true essence of reality. In the vast field of intellectual concerns, there is, it is understood, an active effort to try to reach revelation, to overcome appearances.
