Abstract

The paper traces, in a chronological and integrative perspective, the historical-linguistic processes that shaped Romanian medical terminology, from its classical foundation to the first manifestations of Anglophone influence. Relying on major contributions of translation theory, as well as on local specialized research, the study highlights the mechanisms through which
translation has consistently managed the tension between foreignization and domestication. The analysis identifies three principles with continuity value, the precision conferred by classical borrowings, lexical expansion through neologization and morphological compatibility, which have functioned as the foundations of the modernization of medical terminology. The paper demonstrates that translation in the medical field has never represented a mechanical approach
of terminological transfer, but a contextualized process, shaped by institutional policies, audience expectations and the dynamics of global scientific integration. By reconstructing this evolution within a coherent historical framework, the study highlights the enduring relevance of early strategies for current translation practice.
