Abstract

Dan Lungu's predilection for the type of experimental writing is also emphasized in the short prose volumes of Gang Boys (2005) and In Hell all bulbs are burnt (2011), books in which the aspect of the typological diversity of characters is best underlined by the architectural design of the text which also illustrates a meticulous/precise research for the most expressive resources of the language. The authenticity of the time and of the neighborhood atmosphere, always consistent with the age of the narrator-character, is supported by the elements of familiar arrogance and used by the author with a multitude of expressive effects that shape the identity of a simple, comic and explicit style, on the one hand, and so full of irony, sarcasm, and sometimes even grotesque, on the other hand. The natural and expressive connection realized by the author between the vulgar and familiar phrases is achieved through the use of slang expressions, with the intent to characterize the narrative self that is lacked of any motivation, but deeply emotionally involved, that comments and contemplates, gives tones and outlines the external universe. In other words, the empathy released through the abundant use of the slang terms and expressions, depicts the revolt of a whole world against the restrictions imposed by the dictatorial regime at the ideological, institutional and even behavioral and emotional levels, during the so-called Golden Age. Slang has thus become a distinctive feature, the fundamental-linguistic basis of the construction of the imaginary, a mark of the ideas about the reality of the time and, last but not least, the mechanism of achieving the literary expressivity.
