Textual Reception in ”Focurile” by Magda Isanos – Echoes from Liviu Rebreanu’s Writings

Abstract

Built between speculation and fictional reality, the consciousness of the
main character in the short prose of Gib I. Mihăescu follows a path of alienation,
until the collapse or pathological doubling. Poverty, disease, prostitution, sexual
frustration are just some of the favorite themes of this author who selects his
subjects from a dark spectrum of life, without the intention of saving his characters
from falling into the abyss of consciousness. Contrary to Freudian theories, the
dream is not a form of recovery of the fragmented being, poverty is not lived in
dignity, but facilitates various forms of moral compromise, and sexuality appears
projected as an instinctual force or adventure. The hero in love struggles helplessly
between idea and matter, dominated by a love that postulates the desire to verify
the other, convinced that reality is hidden in something not yet happened, under
the disguise of circumstances that will force him to expose weakness and betrayal.
The creative act recovers a mediocre humanity, a heterogeneous mixture of
disguised guilt, defensive instinct, cowardice and vanity, it cuts scenarios of the
gradual degradation of existence, investing the characters with the appearance of
lucidity. The works chosen for analysis propose a reading model in the register of
the protagonist's bovaric personality, through the context of hallucinatory,
inexplicable situations, with (re)signifying a path of banal existence, in an abyss
from which descend premonitory acts, ambiguities, obsessions, neuroses and the
prospect of death. The narrator, as a critical instance, records the facts
photographically and leaves the reader free to fill in any gaps between the
undecoded images.
