Abstract

The press has always been the main channel by which new ideas in all spheres of life reach
their readers, offering them the possibility of understanding and naturalizing specialized terms. In this context, we intend to present a series of neologisms that have found their way into the Banatian press from the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, specifically in the publication issued in 1886 and published in Caransebeș, entitled "Foaia diecesană". Although being a religious publication, it offered readers articles from various fields, during its existence trying to fully observe the objectives proposed in its program. We can find in the pages of this publication besides archaisms, regionalisms and popular terms, numerous neologistic terms, images and specific joint phrases from different branches of science of French origin, and Latinisms. In order to understand the meaning of these new terms that should be remembered and subsequently used by the general population, the editors of the publication explain them in context in two ways: either by defining the terms subjected to their attention or by synonyms. For the latter case there are two situations: either the term is given a neologistic synonym or the neologism is explained by known terms.
