Abstract

Suffering is a central dimension of Nichita Stănescu’s poetry, beyond playfulness and vitalism. It appears in various forms—sadness, disappointment, anger—and acquires an ontological and philosophical status. The concept of “nonwords” (necuvinte) expresses the inadequacy of language to convey the essential and transforms poetry into an exploration of the ineffable. Love is simultaneously a source of fulfillment and suffering, while autumn becomes a symbol of inner decline. In Elegies, pain is not lamentation but a path toward knowledge and existential lucidity. The poet embraces fragility as a revelatory means. Blue becomes a metaphysical symbol of dematerialization, pain, and infinity. By comparison, Eminescu expresses the pain of the idealist, Bacovia that of alienation, and Stănescu that of the seeker of meaning. Stănescu’s pain is living, intellectual, and transfiguring. It enters into a European dialogue, becoming a form of knowledge and creation.
