THE AROMANIANS – IN SEARCH OF THEIR IDENTITY
Abstract
The Aromanians have a fascinating and interesting history, being 
representatives of the Romanized Easterners to the South of the Danube, the only 
ethnicity that failed to create its own state. They went through history being 
everywhere and nowhere, enriching the cultural treasury of Greece, Serbia, 
Albania, Northern Macedonia and Bulgaria. Considered, for a long time, by 
Bucharest, part of the Romanian people, while Athens were asserting that they are 
Latinized Greeks, the Aromanians begin to assert their identity and obtain the 
status of national minority in the Balkan states. Some Aromanians from Romania 
claim the same statute, a fact that raised controversy, because it could mark the 
failure of Bucharest's 150-year policy in the Balkans.
